The Milaca Theatre was purchased in May of 2009 by Josh & Brigid Halberg.
Josh & Brigid are local residents and both have full time jobs in the Milaca area.
The theater was just days away from closing down and they felt it would be a grave loss for Milaca and it's residents for that to happen! They decided to take a leap of faith and buy this business.
Updates/Upgrades...
The theater is very old and needs quite a bit of work but we feel we are up for the challenge!
Although we could choose to raise prices in order to make some updates, we HAVE NOT raised ANY prices and we have no plans to raise any prices!!
The current movie admission is at $4 per person and will remain at that price - this has been the admission cost for many many years and we see no need to change that at this time!
The candy prices range from $.50 to $2.50 - this is substantially lower than most movie theaters. Our popcorn is popped fresh daily - never leftover from the day before! Our Popcorn is the only thing that has noticeably changed at our concession stand...we changed from flimsy bags to classic popcorn buckets and added a "Jumbo" size bucket (with 1 free refill) which gives patrons 5 different sizes to choose from, without any price increase.
We have many many plans for upgrading different aspects of the theater but most things that need to be done (new seating, upgraded surround sound, handicap accessibility, etc) are very costly. All of these upgrades WILL happen in time, we are just determined to complete them WITHOUT upping our prices, so they will no doubt take even longer!
**March 2010 - Installed new screen, upgraded to a newer projector, and upgraded the popcorn machine (from a 1948 model to a 1981 model).
**June 2010 - Upgraded the plumbing to include Hot Water in both bathrooms!
The first ever theater in Milaca was called the "Casino Theatre" - it opened in 1915 and was located across the street from where the current theater sits (in the Kulick Jackson Law Office). The first ever movie shown in Milaca was on New Year's Eve in 1915.
When the theater first opened movies ranged in price from a dime to 50 cents, depending on the show at that time.
In 1930, "Talking" and "Sound" equipment was added...this thrilled the movie goers.
In as early as 1934, a free kid's movie was shown for youngsters around Christmas and Easter - a tradition that is still in place today. The feature in 1934 was “Huckleberry Finn”.
In 1944, the theater’s name changed to “Cozy Theatre” and a year later it was refurbished following a fire.
On New Year’s Day in 1950, the “new” theater opened at its current location with the movie “Tell It To The Judge.”
The theater has had several owners over the years.
